Last year, I had a strange dream. My father and I were wading in an industrial canal, reminiscent of a subway, as thousands of hatchery-raised fish were being released into it. The fish crowded, slimy, around our legs, and I knew in the way that one knows in a dream that they thought, as they hit the water, that they were drowning—that they had to experience death before entering adulthood. The next day, I told my father about the dream. He revealed that, when I was three, when we were living in Pittsburgh, he took me to see a truckful of catfish being pumped into an artificial pond.

Cultural identity is the identity of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality , ethnicity , religion , social class , generation , locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. In this way, cultural identity is both characteristic of the individual but also of the culturally identical group of members sharing the same cultural identity or upbringing. Cultural and ethnic identity is a subset of the communication theory of identity that establishes four "frames of identity" that allow us to view how we build identity. These frames include the personal frame, enactment of communication frame, relationship frame, and communal frame.

With our multi-disciplinary background philosophy, linguistics, cognitive sciences , we will seek to answer this question at least partially by first explaining what we mean by dynamics of identity part 1 and how we study social media in terms of interactivity and discursiveness and by the digital traces they leave behind part 2. Thirdly, we will examine identity construction with the temporal, spatial and otherness dimensions, which are the three fundamental aspects of human interaction part 3.
