Kenya at Fifty and the Betrayal of Nationalism: The Paradoxes of Two Family Dynasties
Whoever thinks that no progress was made during the 'Dark Ages', please read this book. This book is dedicated to those who open-mindedly seek knowledge wherever it is. A very short and easy read, meant to accompany a BBC short series. If you're looking for a very brief overview, this book may suffice. Worth reading if you need convincing that Islamic scholars came up with brilliant scientific innovations, and as an introduction to the subject, but for a proper history of science and Islam I think you'd need to look elsewhere.
Kenya After 50 pp Cite as. The fight for political independence in Kenya was waged on many fronts—the cultural, the social, the political, the economic, and the military—and by multiple social forces—individual and corporate, ethnic and religious, as well as regional and transregional. Yet, within the first decade of independence, the sense of unity and collective purpose irreparably atrophied and by the end of the decade it had virtually died. Over five decades since independence, Kenya is much less of a nation than it was in This chapter sets out to probe, explore, and analyze this betrayal of anticolonial nationalism in Kenya, and evaluate its consequences for the future of the country. The chapter proceeds by focusing on the paradoxes inherent in the relationship between two political families—the Odingas and the Kenyattas—whose political dynamics have, to a large extent, defined what ought to have been and what actually is, in the Kenyan body politic. In the late s, the French philosopher Raymond Aron diagnosed a marked affinity between communist and capitalist social systems of which, as he emphasized, analysts on both sides of the Iron Curtain were well aware. They argued that all industrial societies—regardless of their ideological grounds—were on their way to solving major social problems through a technical fix. Shared concerns with organizational questions of how to raise economic productivity had replaced the once heated debate over property ownership. While the systemic dichotomy between the East and the West seemed to wither, Aron drew attention
African Sage Philosophy
This encyclopedia article focuses primarily on Oruka and his immediate sources of inspiration, and then includes others whose projects share similar methodologies and goals. Oruka usually but not always emphasized keeping the identity of the individual sage well known. He also insisted that it was the sage who knew the traditions of his or her ethnic group the best, and who would be able to have critical distance to evaluate and sometimes reject prevailing beliefs and practices. The first goal was to help construct texts of indigenous African philosophies. African wisdom that had been marginalized by academia, and by city life, could provide valuable solutions to contemporaneous problems in Africa. Such texts of interviews could also sustain intellectual curiosity and provide practical guidance or phronesis. Oruka searched for sages and wanted a wider public to know not only their words written down in transcripts but also about their lives.
Until , Kenya comprised eight administrative units known as provinces. The largest ethnic group in the province, the Luo, traditionally featured a stateless, decentralized, segmentary lineage system, with neither a single overall leader nor a hereditary leadership system. Yet by the s, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga had welded Luos into a fervent and united support base. Moreover, when Jaramogi died in , his son, Raila Odinga, took over Luo leadership. This chapter re-conceptualizes Odingaism as a philosophy, retraces its socio-cultural and political roots, and examines its influence on Luo politics.

Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga October — 20 January was a Luo chieftain who became a prominent figure in Kenya 's struggle for independence. He later served as Kenya 's first Vice-President , and thereafter as opposition leader. Jaramogi is credited for the phrase "Not Yet Uhuru" which is the title of his autobiography written in the s during his time under house arrest. Jaramogi's son Raila was also in detention for a period of eight years. Christened Obadiah Adonijah , he later renounced his Christian names and became known as Oginga Odinga. With time, Odinga and his group undertook to strengthen the union between Luo people in the whole of East Africa. His efforts earned him admiration and recognition among the Luo, who revered him as Ker — a title previously held by the fabled classical Luo king, Ramogi Ajwang, who reigned years before him.
