Self-awareness is the capacity to take oneself as the object of thought — people can think, act, and experience, and they can also think about what they are thinking, doing, and experiencing.

Objective self-awareness is attention focused on the self as a socially evaluable object, as defined by Shelley Duval, Robert Wicklund, and other contemporary social psychologists. Self-focused attention or self-awareness as often discussed in the context of social psychology refers to situational self-awareness, as opposed to dispositional self-focus. Dispositional self-focus more accurately relates to the construct of self-consciousness, which allows psychologists to measure individual differences in the tendency to think about and attend to the self.

The housewives were selected by the simple random sampling technique and put into the experimental and comparative groups which each group comprised The duration of the program was 10 weeks. The activities comprised: 1 lecture, video watching, skills training, workbook doing, 2 telling successful experiences, 3 health model, 4 verbal persuasions by buddy, and 5 emotional arousal. Content validity indexes CVI were 0. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t- test. The results revealed as follows.

Objective self-awareness theory contends that focusing attention on the self initiates an automatic comparison of self to standards. To gain evidence for automatic self—standard comparison processes, two experiments manipulated attention to self with subliminal first-name priming. People completed a computer-based parity task after being instructed that the standard was to be fast or to be accurate. Subliminal first name priming increased behavioral adherence to the explicit standard. When told to be fast, self-focused people made more mistakes and had faster response times; when told to be accurate, self-focused people made fewer mistakes. A manipulation of conscious self-awareness via a mirror had the same self-regulatory effects.

In contrast, an impact of their own voice was partially found. Furthermore, no effect of other voices was found. Overall, we observed a limited effect of self-focusing stimuli in Japanese participants, although it should be noted that their own voices were relatively effective for capturing self-focused attention. According to objective self-awareness OSA theory Duval and Wicklund, , people have bidirectional conscious attention; this refers to when attention is directed away from the self called subjective self-awareness and when attention is directed toward the self [called OSA ]. Both are mutually exclusive because people cannot direct their attention away from and toward the self at the same time. Thus, people usually go back and forth quickly between subjective self-awareness and OSA.

Objective Self-Awareness Theory: Recent Progress and Enduring Problems

Swiss Journal of Psychology , 62, pp. With favorable expectations of success, participants low in self-awareness should be less persistent measured by time until explicitly giving up an intractable task than participants high in self-awareness. The opposite should be true for unfavorable expectancy. Empirical evidence reported in this paper shows that various theory-consistent ways of manipulating expectancies and self-awareness as well as subtracting periods of mental disengagement from time on task did not yield this predicted interaction.
